The Indian Premier League trade window for 2026 closed on November 15, 2025, and it was one of the busiest ever. Eight confirmed deals. Ten players changing teams. And one trade that shocked everyone. The mini-auction is set for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, but the real auction already started weeks before.

The biggest move saw Sanju Samson leave Rajasthan Royals after a decade and join Chennai Super Kings. In return, CSK sent Ravindra Jadeja back to Rajasthan. England’s Sam Curran also moved to RR as part of the deal. Samson joins at ₹18 crore and gives them a strong top-order option and possibly a long-term face of the team.

The trade window is closed, but the drama is not. The auction in Abu Dhabi will decide who planned well and who still has gaps to fix. IPL 2026 has already started, even before the first ball is bowled.

How the IPL Trade Window Actually Works

A trade is simple in idea. One team sends a player to another team without that player entering the auction. The player keeps his contract, unless both sides agree to change it.

For IPL 2026, the trade window opened about a month after the 2025 season ended. It stayed open until one week before the December 16 auction. It will open again after the auction and close one month before the tournament begins.

There are two main ways teams make trades.

    1. Player Swaps

This is when two teams exchange players directly.

A recent example is the big move between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Sanju Samson moved to CSK at ₹18 crore. Ravindra Jadeja moved to RR, but his salary was reduced from ₹18 crore to ₹14 crore. That ₹4 crore gap did not disappear. It was handled through a special rule.

    2. Cash Deals

In this case, one team sells a player to another team for money. The buying team takes the player and his salary. The selling team gets that salary amount added to their auction purse.

A past example was when Cameron Green moved from Mumbai Indians to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an all-cash deal.

    Player Consent Is a Must

Even though franchises hold contracts, they cannot trade a player without his written approval.

    Here is how it works:

    • Teams agree on a deal.
    • Both players involved must give written consent.
    • The IPL Governing Council checks and approves it.

In the Samson-Jadeja swap, both players had to agree. Reports said Samson wanted a fresh move, and Jadeja accepted a salary cut.

    Who Can Be Traded?

Not every player can be moved.

    Eligible:

    • Retained players.
    • Players already under contract before the retention deadline.

    Not eligible:

    • Players just bought in the latest auction.
    • Players already released. Once released, they must go into the auction pool.

This is why big swaps like Samson-Jadeja had to be completed before the November 15 retention deadline.

Core Rules Every Fan and Franchise Must Know

Behind every big IPL trade story, there is a fixed set of rules that no team can bend. When fans talk about Sanju Samson moving to CSK or Ravindra Jadeja going back to Rajasthan, the headlines focus on the names. But what really decides everything is the rulebook.

The first thing that changes in any trade is the auction purse. The moment a team buys a player through a trade, their available money for the auction drops by that player’s salary. When Chennai Super Kings took Sanju Samson at ₹18 crore, their purse instantly reduced by ₹18 crore. If they had ₹60 crore before the deal, they were left with ₹42 crore after it. There is no negotiation here. It is automatic.

On the other side, the team that lets the player go gets that salary added back to their purse. When Rajasthan Royals traded Samson, they gained ₹18 crore in their auction budget. That is salary cap relief. They no longer have to pay him, so that money becomes free to use.

Another rule that cannot be ignored is player consent. No player can be traded without written approval. Both teams must inform the player, get their signed agreement, and send that to the IPL Governing Council. Without that signature, the trade simply does not happen.

In the Samson-Jadeja swap, both players gave written consent. Samson reportedly asked to leave Rajasthan and approved the move to CSK. Jadeja agreed not just to the trade but also to a ₹4 crore pay cut. Without their written approval, the deal would have failed.

Trade Window Dates and When Deals Can Be Executed

Trades can only happen during fixed windows. There is a pre-auction window that opens after the season ends and closes seven days before the auction. That is when the recent big trades took place. Then there is a post-auction window, which opens the day after the auction and stays open until 30 days before the tournament begins. Only during these periods can teams make moves.

Not every player can be traded. Only retained players are eligible. If a player has been released, he must enter the auction pool. There is no trade option after release. That is why big deals must be completed before the retention deadline. If Rajasthan had released Samson instead of trading him, he would have gone into the auction, and CSK would have had to bid against other teams.

Five Years of Trades That Rewired IPL Franchises

Over the last five years, the IPL trade window stopped being a quiet side process and turned into a serious power tool.

In 2022, one of the big moves was Shardul Thakur going from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹10.75 crore in an all-cash deal plus uncapped all-rounder Aman Khan, who had been picked for ₹20 lakh in the 2022 auction. Thakur had taken 15 wickets in 14 matches in IPL 2022 and scored 120 runs at a strike rate close to 138.

Then came November 2023, and everything changed with Hardik Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians. He moved from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal worth ₹15 crore. Hardik had led Gujarat to a title in their first season and a runner-up finish in the second.

Cameron Green’s move to Royal Challengers Bangalore happened at the same time and cost ₹17.5 crore. His first season with Mumbai had been strong. He scored 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28, including a century and two fifties. He also picked up six wickets. Most teams would never let a player like that go. But Mumbai saw a bigger picture.

By November 2025, the trade window delivered its most complex move yet. The Samson-Jadeja blockbuster between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. Sanju Samson moved to CSK at his ₹18 crore salary after spending a decade with Rajasthan. Ravindra Jadeja went the other way, returning to Rajasthan, the franchise where he began.

The Hardik Pandya and Cameron Green Era of Big Money Moves

The 2023 trade window changed how people looked at IPL deals. In just 72 hours, two massive moves happened together. Three teams were affected.

At the center of it all was Hardik Pandya. He became the first title-winning captain in IPL history to be traded. He had led Gujarat Titans to the trophy in 2022 and then taken them to the final again in 2023, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings by 5 wickets. Still, in November 2023, he moved back to the Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal worth ₹15 crore.

This was not a normal transfer. No captain who had just won a title had ever switched teams like this. Other captains had moved before, like Ravichandran Ashwin and Ajinkya Rahane in 2020, but none of them were reigning champions when they did it. Hardik’s move was different.

There was a huge money problem for Mumbai. Before the trade, their auction purse was just ₹0.05 crore. Even with the extra ₹5 crore given to each team for the mini-auction, they were nowhere close to affording Hardik’s ₹15 crore salary. They had already released 11 players, which increased their purse to ₹15.25 crore. That was barely enough to buy Hardik and would have left them with almost nothing for the auction.

So they made another bold move.

Cameron Green, who had been bought for ₹17.5 crore in the 2022 auction, was traded to Royal Challengers Bangalore in an all-cash deal. His salary stayed the same. That ₹17.5 crore immediately went back into Mumbai’s purse. This became the most expensive trade in IPL history.

Green had not failed at Mumbai. In his first season, he scored 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28. He hit an unbeaten century and two fifties and took six wickets. Most teams would never let go of a 24-year-old all-rounder with those numbers. But Mumbai had a bigger plan. They wanted Hardik back as their future captain.

Green’s first season at RCB in 2024 was decent but not huge. He scored 255 runs and took 10 wickets in 13 matches. But the real impact came in 2025. He handled spin in the middle overs and gave the team a pace-bowling option. The ₹17.5 crore trade, which many questioned at first, finally paid off when RCB lifted their first IPL trophy in May 2025.

How IPL Trades Evolved From Rare Events Into Strategic Weapons

When the IPL first brought in the trade window in 2009, it was not a big deal. It was just another rule on paper. Teams still depended fully on the auction. Trades were rare and simple. One early example was the Mumbai Indians swapping Shikhar Dhawan for Ashish Nehra with the Delhi Daredevils.

The shift started around 2022. When Shardul Thakur moved from Delhi Capitals to Kolkata Knight Riders for ₹10.75 crore, it showed that teams were ready to spend serious money even before the auction. That deal was not small.

    But 2023 changed everything.

In a 72-hour period, three teams pulled off connected deals that rewired their futures. Hardik Pandya moved from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians for ₹15 crore. He became the first title-winning captain in IPL history to be traded. To make space for him, Mumbai traded Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore for ₹17.5 crore, which became the most expensive trade in IPL history.

By 2026, the trade window had fully changed. That pre-auction period saw eight confirmed deals involving ten players. In the early years, some seasons did not even have that many trades.

The numbers tell the story. Between 2019 and 2021, there were fewer than three trades per year, usually under ₹5 crore. From 2022 to 2024, the average jumped to five or six trades, often between ₹10 and ₹15 crore. In 2026, deals went up to ₹18 crore.

Sanju Samson to CSK the Trade That Defined IPL 2026

In November 2025, on the morning of the retention deadline, the IPL got one of its biggest shocks. Sanju Samson, after spending ten seasons with Rajasthan Royals, was traded to Chennai Super Kings. In return, RR got Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.

Sanju Samson moved to CSK at his existing ₹18 crore salary. There was no change in his contract value. Ravindra Jadeja went the other way, from CSK to Rajasthan Royals, but his salary was reduced from ₹18 crore to ₹14 crore. That meant a ₹4 crore cut. Sam Curran also joined RR from CSK at his existing ₹2.4 crore deal.

The IPL officially confirmed the trade on November 15, 2025. In their statement, they mentioned that Jadeja, who had played 12 seasons for CSK and over 250 IPL matches overall, would now represent Rajasthan Royals, and that his league fee had been revised from ₹18 crore to ₹14 crore.

For CSK, this move was clearly about the future. Sanju Samson is 30 years old, has played 177 IPL matches, and has scored more than 4,500 runs. He brings experience but is still in his prime. The big topic around CSK has been life after MS Dhoni. At 44, Dhoni signed for one more season, but everyone knows the transition is close.

CSK also had performance problems to solve. They had missed the playoffs for two straight seasons. Their middle order looked old. Their hitting power was limited. Their spin attack was not as dominant as before. They needed fresh energy at the top.

Why Rajasthan Royals Agreed to Part With Their Own Captain

For Rajasthan Royals, getting Jadeja was both emotional and tactical. He had started his IPL journey with RR before becoming a CSK legend. Even with the salary reduction to ₹14 crore, he remained a senior all-rounder with huge experience. The ₹4 crore difference between his old and new salary was part of the structured agreement.

In 11 seasons with Rajasthan Royals, he scored 4,027 runs for them alone. In 2024, he had his best season with 531 runs. After IPL 2025, he reportedly asked for a release, which made a move likely. CSK stepped in at the right time.

That is why the Sanju Samson move to CSK became the trade that defined IPL 2026. It shaped the future of two franchises in one morning.

What Jadeja and Curran Give Back to Rajasthan Royals

RR turned one ₹18 crore batter into two real all-rounders for a total of ₹16.4 crore. Ravindra Jadeja came in at a revised ₹14 crore, which was ₹4 crore less than what he was earning before. Sam Curran joined for ₹2.4 crore. That number stands out even more when you remember that Punjab Kings once paid ₹18.5 crore for him.

Ravindra Jadeja brings two clear skills.

With the bat, he is more than a lower-order hitter. In 254 IPL matches, he has scored 3,260 runs at a strike rate of 130.24. In 2025, he scored 301 runs in 14 innings at 135.59, including two fifties. He can attack or control, depending on the match situation.

With the ball, he has taken over 100 IPL wickets. His left-arm spin is about control and pressure. Even in 2025, when he picked up only 8 wickets in 14 matches, his economy stayed low. He keeps runs down in the middle overs, which is where many T20 games swing.

    Sam Curran fills another gap.

His main strength is with the new ball. Left-arm swing in the powerplay is rare and valuable. He can trouble opening batters in the first six overs. In the 2022 T20 World Cup, he took wickets at an average of 11.38 and an economy of 6.52, and was Player of the Tournament.

Against Delhi Capitals, he once took 4/11 in 2019. Overall, he has 613 runs in 46 IPL matches at a strike rate of 143.22, with three fifties. That means he is not just a bowler. He can hit late runs and change games in the final overs. Like Jadeja, he is also a strong fielder, who lifts the whole unit.

Complete Breakdown of Every Confirmed IPL 2026 Trade

IPL 2026 did not wait for the auction to create drama. The trade window itself gave fans enough talking points. Here’s a simple breakdown of every confirmed deal.

    1) Mohammed Shami → Lucknow Super Giants (₹10 crore)

Shami moved from Sunrisers Hyderabad to Lucknow Super Giants in an all-cash deal at his existing ₹10 crore salary. SRH had bought him as one of their biggest picks in the 2025 mega auction, but his season did not go well. He took six wickets in nine matches and had an economy rate above 11. Injuries did not help either.

    2) Sherfane Rutherford → Mumbai Indians (₹2.6 crore)

Sherfane Rutherford left Gujarat Titans and joined Mumbai Indians at his existing ₹2.6 crore fee. The IPL confirmed the move officially. Mumbai needed middle-order power. In 2025, that was a weak area. Rutherford was one of the few bright spots for GT. He scored 291 runs in 11 innings at an average of 32.33 and a strike rate of 157.29.

    3) Shardul Thakur → Mumbai Indians (₹2 crore)

Shardul Thakur moved from Lucknow Super Giants to Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal worth ₹2 crore. He had joined LSG in 2025 as an injury replacement after going unsold. This is a return to MI for Thakur. He was with them from 2010 to 2012 and now leads Mumbai in domestic cricket. He has 107 IPL wickets and 325 runs from 105 matches. He also has title-winning experience with CSK in 2018 and 2021.

    4) Arjun Tendulkar → Lucknow Super Giants (₹30 lakh)

Arjun Tendulkar moved from Mumbai Indians to Lucknow Super Giants at his base price of ₹30 lakh. He made his IPL debut in 2023 and has played five matches, taking three wickets. This is not a short-term move. It is a development bet. LSG wants to build a young left-arm pace option to balance their right-arm-heavy attack.

    5) Mayank Markande → Mumbai Indians (₹30 lakh)

Mayank Markande returned to Mumbai Indians from Kolkata Knight Riders at ₹30 lakh. He started his IPL career with MI in 2018 and has 37 wickets in 37 matches. Bringing Markande back gives them a leg-spin option who knows the franchise setup.

    6) Nitish Rana → Delhi Capitals (₹4.2 crore)

Nitish Rana joined Delhi Capitals from Rajasthan Royals at his existing ₹4.2 crore salary. In 2025, he played 11 matches for RR, scoring 217 runs at an average of 21.70, mostly at number three. He has over 100 IPL matches and has captained KKR before. He is also a two-time IPL winner – 2017 with MI and 2024 with KKR.

    7) Donovan Ferreira → Rajasthan Royals (₹1 crore, revised from ₹75 lakh)

Donovan Ferreira returned to Rajasthan Royals from Delhi Capitals. His salary was revised from ₹75 lakh to ₹1 crore. Ferreira first played for RR in 2024, moved to Delhi in 2025, and now comes back. The ₹25 lakh raise shows RR believes he has improved.

    8) The Big One: Samson – Jadeja – Curran

The biggest trade of them all was the three-way structure between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.

    • Sanju Samson: RR → CSK (₹18 crore, no change)
    • Ravindra Jadeja: CSK → RR (₹14 crore, reduced from ₹18 crore)
    • Sam Curran: CSK → RR (₹2.4 crore, no change)

Mohammed Shami to LSG and the Big Pace Moves

When Mohammed Shami moved to Lucknow Super Giants on November 15, 2025, the price did not change. It was ₹10 crore, the same amount Sunrisers Hyderabad had paid for him at the 2025 mega auction.

After missing IPL 2024 due to injury, he returned but managed only six wickets in nine matches. His average was 56.17 and his economy went above 11. The worst moment came when he gave away 75 runs in four overs against Punjab Kings, the most expensive figures by an Indian in IPL history.

Playing Ranji Trophy for Bengal, Shami picked up 15 wickets in three matches at an average of 15.53, including a five-wicket haul. The rhythm and pace looked better again. With 133 IPL wickets and five straight seasons of 19 or more wickets before injury, Shami brings experience with the new ball and control at the death.

The Smart Small Deals That Quietly Strengthened MI and DC

While everyone talked about the big Samson and Shami trades, the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals were busy doing something quieter. They did not spend big money but fixed problems.

MI brought in Shardul Thakur for ₹2 crore, Sherfane Rutherford for ₹2.6 crore, and Mayank Markande for ₹30 lakh. Total cost: ₹4.9 crore. That is less than what many teams spend on one overseas player.

Shardul Thakur has 107 IPL wickets and can bat lower down. In 2025, he took 13 wickets in 10 matches for LSG. His economy was high, but at ₹2 crore, the risk is low. In 2025, Sherfane Rutherford scored 291 runs at a strike rate of 157.29 for Gujarat Titans. Mayank Markande returned for just ₹30 lakh. He gives them a leg-spin option for those who already understand their system.

Delhi picked Nitish Rana for ₹4.2 crore. He brings over 100 IPL matches of experience and a leadership background. Rana gives them that without breaking the bank.

Analysis of the Headline Sanju Samson Trade

The Sanju Samson–Ravindra Jadeja trade became the biggest story of the IPL 2026 trading window. It was not a simple player swap. It was a three-team deal that changed the plans of two big franchises. Chennai Super Kings used the move to plan for their future, while Rajasthan Royals used it to rebuild the balance of their squad.

In the end, both teams had clear reasons for making the deal. Chennai Super Kings wanted to prepare for life after Dhoni and lock in a long-term Indian star. Rajasthan Royals wanted to fix their squad balance by bringing in all-rounders. The trade carried risks for both sides. But it also showed how teams are thinking about the future rather than just one season.

Strengths and Opportunities for Chennai Super Kings Post Trade

For Chennai Super Kings, the biggest gain was getting Sanju Samson at ₹18 crore. In an IPL auction, a top Indian batter like Samson could easily cost much more. Through the trade window, CSK got him at a fixed price and avoided a bidding war. Samson’s record with Rajasthan Royals shows why the move made sense. In 11 seasons he scored 4,027 runs, led the team to the 2022 final, and had a strong 531-run season in 2024. He also improved his international record with back-to-back T20I centuries in late 2024.

Samson can also open or bat in the top order with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has become one of the team’s most reliable batters. Gaikwad already has 2,502 IPL runs in 71 matches and scored 583 runs in the 2024 season. Together they give CSK a strong top order that mixes stability and aggressive hitting. This matters at the spin-friendly Chepauk ground, where controlling the middle overs is important.

Another reason for the trade is the future after MS Dhoni. Dhoni is 44 and playing what could be his final season. Samson has already captained Rajasthan for many matches and took them to the 2022 final. At 31, he fits the timeline for CSK’s next leadership phase. The team can slowly bring him into a bigger role before Dhoni eventually steps away.

Weaknesses and Threats Facing Both Sides of the Deal

However, the move also created some problems for CSK. Paying ₹18 crore for one player reduced their auction budget. They went into the auction with ₹43.40 crore and had to fill several spots. Because of that, the team focused heavily on uncapped Indian players. They spent ₹14.2 crore each on Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, which was a huge gamble for players entering their first IPL season.

For Rajasthan Royals, losing Samson was a big change. He had been with the franchise for 11 seasons and captained the team since 2021. His departure meant the team lost not only a top batter but also its leader. The situation became even more difficult because head coach Rahul Dravid also left at the end of the 2025 season. That created a leadership reset at the franchise.

Instead of giving captaincy to Jadeja, the Royals decided to trust Riyan Parag as their new captain for IPL 2026. Jadeja accepted a pay cut from ₹18 crore to ₹14 crore to make the trade work. That gave the Royals extra salary space to sign other players. But some people wondered if the reduced salary meant Jadeja was nearing the end of his career. At 36, his international future is uncertain.

How IPL 2026 Trades Shaped Every Team’s Auction Blueprint

Before the IPL 2026 auction even began, the trade window had already changed the plans of several teams. The best example was Lucknow Super Giants. They made one of the most important moves of the window by bringing in Mohammed Shami from Sunrisers Hyderabad for ₹10 crore. This was the exact price SRH had paid for him in the 2025 mega auction.

Lucknow also added a young option by trading for Arjun Tendulkar from the Mumbai Indians for ₹30 lakh. This was a small investment but gave them a left-arm pace option for the future. Together, the two trades cost ₹10.30 crore. If Lucknow tried to buy similar players in the auction, the total price could have gone to about ₹16.5–19 crore. Because of these trades, the team likely saved around ₹6.2 crore to ₹8.7 crore.

Teams That Used Trades to Avoid Overpaying at Auction

The IPL trade window often helps teams avoid the chaos of the auction table. One clear example was Lucknow Super Giants. They brought in Mohammed Shami from Sunrisers Hyderabad for ₹10 crore, which was exactly the price SRH had paid in the 2025 mega auction.

Shami is one of the most proven Indian fast bowlers in the league. He has more than 130 IPL wickets and has already won a Purple Cap. In a mini-auction where good Indian pacers are limited, he would almost certainly have started a bidding war. Looking at past auctions where players like Deepak Chahar and Avesh Khan received big bids, Shami could easily have reached ₹16–18 crore. By completing the trade early, LSG likely saved around ₹6–8 crore.

Trade vs Retention vs. Auction: Which Route Offers the Best Value

IPL teams now have three different ways to build their squads – retention, trading, and auctions. Each path has its own benefits and risks.

Retention is usually the cheapest way to keep a star player. The IPL has fixed price slabs for retained players. The first retention costs ₹18 crore, the second ₹14 crore, the third ₹11 crore, and so on. A player like Virat Kohli might attract ₹25 crore or more in an auction, but retention keeps the cost fixed.

Trades sit in the middle. The buying team pays the player’s current salary, which means there is no bidding war. The Sanju Samson deal showed this clearly. Chennai Super Kings got him for ₹18 crore through a trade, while auction estimates suggested he might reach ₹22–25 crore if bidding started.

The auction is the most open system. It gives teams access to all released players and new talent. For franchises with big budgets, like Kolkata Knight Riders, it becomes the main way to rebuild a squad. However, auctions are unpredictable. If several teams want the same player, prices can climb quickly and go far beyond expected value.

What IPL Trade Trends Signal About the 2027 Auction Cycle

In the early years of the IPL, trades were rare. Teams mostly depended on the auction to fix their squads. But over the last few years, that approach has clearly changed.

Between 2019 and 2021, teams usually made fewer than three trades in a cycle, and most deals were worth under ₹5 crore. From 2022 to 2024 the number increased to around five or six trades, with deals reaching ₹10–15 crore. By the 2026 season the trend had grown even stronger. More than eight trades involving ten players were completed, and some deals reached as high as ₹18 crore.

A big factor behind the rise in trades is the business side of the IPL. Franchise values have increased massively. Rajasthan Royals, which was bought for about $65 million in 2008, is now valued at more than $1 billion. Royal Challengers Bangalore could be worth close to $2 billion. In the end, the biggest lesson from the 2026 trade window is simple. Teams now see trades as an advantage, not a last-minute fix.

    Final Words

As the auction in Abu Dhabi came to an end and the 2026 season moved closer, one thing became clear. The trade window had already changed the shape of the league. The numbers also show how much the league has changed. A few years ago teams usually made fewer than three trades in a cycle. In 2026 there were eight confirmed deals.

That is what makes the IPL interesting. Trades and auctions only set up the teams. The real story is written during the season. Jadeja could shine again in Jaipur. Samson could thrive in Chennai under the guidance of Dhoni. Rutherford could become the finisher Mumbai has been searching for since Kieron Pollard stepped away. Shami could once again show why he was one of the league’s best fast bowlers.

Still, one big question remains. Did the Sanju Samson trade turn Chennai into title favorites? Follow for more IPL 2026 updates. The trades are done, but the real game starts now.
