The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will get underway on March 28 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, with the final likely to be on May 31, also at RCB’s home ground.

In December, the auction took place in Abu Dhabi. Here are some stats that popped up:

    ICE777

A total of 48 Indian and 29 overseas players were brought in the IPL 2026 auction, where Australian all-rounder Cameron Green was the most expensive pick of the auction, purchased by KKR for a whopping INR 25.2 crore.

All teams have filled their squads of 25 members to complete the IPL 2026 players list. The IPL 2026 promises to be an exciting event, where we will see the 44-year-old MS Dhoni participate, and so will the 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

The Framework That Shaped the IPL 2026 Players List

While the IPL 2026 players list was finalized following the auction, KKR will be making one tweak: KKR released Mustafizur Rahman after being told by the BCCI, and the franchise has not yet announced a replacement.

This was a mini-auction, and according to the IPL retention rules, teams could retain as many players as they wish, keeping the cap of eight overseas stars.

Some key stats regarding IPL 2026 retentions:

    • Across the 10 franchises, 173 players were retained.
    • The retained players list included 49 foreigners.
    • KKR retained the least number of players, 12, whereas Punjab Kings retained 21 cricketers, the most.
    • All 77 available slots were filled in the auction.

The biggest news, though, before the auction was the trade of Sanju Samson to CSK, and in return, RR traded in Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.

Mumbai Indians made three smart trades, bringing in Shardul Thakur, Sherfane Rutherford, and Mayank Markande, while trading out Arjun Tendulkar.

Retention Trades and Auction Three Paths to a Final Squad

Some teams were busy in the IPL player trade window and made sensational trades ahead of the auction. Apart from CSK and RR swapping Samson with Jadeja and Curran, MI actively used the trade window to strengthen their squad, roping in Rutherford, Thakur, and Markande, while LSG traded in Arjun from MI.

Mohammed Shami moved to LSG from SRH, while Nitish Rana left RR and will now play for Delhi Capitals. South Africa Donovan Ferreira returned to RR through the trade window, going away from DC.

The trading of a player could result in a change of salary. For example, Ferreira’s moving from DC to RR meant his fee increased from INR 75 lakh to INR 1 crore, while others such as Markande, Arjun, Rana, Curran, and Samson transferred for their existing contract.

Interestingly, Jadeja’s contract after moving to RR has reduced to INR 14 crore from the INR 18 crore he earned at CSK.

Further, according to IPL rules, the retention fee of the players remains the same until a mega auction at the price they were bought in the auction previously. The contract of a retained player can be modified only when he is part of the retained list ahead of a mega auction.

Which Teams Retained the Most and the Fewest Players

In the IPL 2026 retained players list, the maximum number of retained players were in the Punjab Kings squad. The runners-up of the 2025 season hold on to 21 of their players. Following PBKS were Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans with 20 players each.

Defending champions RCB retained 17 players from their title-winning season.

KKR retained only 12 players from last season, the fewest of all 10 franchises, as they went for a significant overhaul.

Retained Icons and the Stars Who Anchored Their Franchises

The franchises with the largest fanbases have built their empires on and off the field through their superstar cricketers, who almost always are Indians.

The three biggest names in this bracket would be MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.

There was intrigue around Captain Cool Dhoni ahead of the mega auction prior to IPL 2025 as CSK retained Dhoni for only INR 4 crore. They could do so because the BCCI had reinstated their ‘uncapped’ player rule that they had scrapped in 2021. According to this rule, a player can be retained in the ‘uncapped’ category if he has retired from international cricket and not played for his country for more than five years.

Since Dhoni’s last game for India was in mid-2019, he falls into this ‘uncapped’ category, the retention price of which is INR 4 crore.

India’s Big Three Kohli, Rohit and Bumrah Stay at Their Clubs

Further, Kohli was retained by RCB for INR 21 crore in the IPL 2026 players list, while Rohit’s retention price decreased to INR 16.3 crore. Jasprit Bumrah, an important pillar in MI’s success, was Mumbai’s costliest retention, worth INR 18 crore.

The most expensive retained player recently was SRH’s Heinrich Klaasen for a contract of INR 23 crore, which is five crore more costly than captain Pat Cummins’ retention amount.

Young Guns Who Earned Their Retention in 2025 and Got Rewarded

The story of the IPL 2025 was Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, the 14-year-old who was acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.1 crore. In a season of struggle for RR, Sooryavanshi emerged as a beacon of strength as he blasted 252 runs in seven outings at a strike rate of 206. His season included a sensational century against Gujarat Titans.

Apart from Sooryavanshi, a couple of young batsmen also left their imprints. The CSK pair of Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel was impressive and earned retentions.

The Complete IPL 2026 Teams and Players List at a Glance

Title Contenders With the Strongest Balanced Squads

These are the three franchises we believe are the strongest title contenders for IPL 2026:

    1. Mumbai Indians
    2. Sunrisers Hyderabad
    3. Punjab Kings

The Mumbai Indians squad post-auction is arguably the most complete unit of all the 10 franchises. The fact that MI traded in three players and went with only INR 2.75 crore into the auction, where they secured Quinton de Kock, reflects their strategic smartness. IPL 2026 could well be MI’s year to inch ahead of CSK on trophy count.

SRH’s boom-or-bust approach produced contrasting results in IPL 2024, where they finished as the runners-up, and in IPL 2025, where they failed to qualify for the playoffs. SRH has added Liam Livingstone to their IPL players list 2026. If their batsmen fire once again in unison, it would be almost impossible for any team to halt SRH’s charge.

The Punjab Kings were a couple of hits away from their maiden IPL title. Ponting and Iyer have infused an intimidating brand of cricket in the PBKS setup, with their youngsters punching above their weight fearlessly. Marco Jansen has been in dream form over the past year and is being hailed as the best all-format all-rounder right now. Learning from their experience from last season, PBKS’s squad gives an impression that it could finish last season’s incomplete job.

Wildcard Squads That Could Surprise in IPL 2026

Following the IPL 2026 auction, not many have put confidence in the Rajasthan Royals’ squad. That is partly because their captain Sanju Samson has been traded away to CSK.

However, it might prove to be a blessing in disguise for the Royals, as last season neither Samson nor Riyan Parag could bat at their preferred positions due to multiple reasons.

Now, Parag is at the helm. The strategy for RR would be less muddled this time. Plus, the inclusion of Jadeja and Curran as part of Samson’s trade bolsters both their lower-order and bowling options. Sooryavanshi and Hetmyer are in enviable form, while Archer, Adam Milne, and Ravi Bishnoi provide muscle to the bowling department.

The inaugural champions of the IPL could be the dark horse or the wildcard team of IPL 2026.

The IPL 2026 Released Players List and What Each Release Signals

71 cricketers were part of the IPL 2026 released players list. Here is the breakdown of one important release made by each of the 10 franchises.

KKR’s Sweeping Overhaul After Three Years of Continuity

Perhaps the most shocking name in the IPL 2026 released players list was that of Andre Russell, KKR’s long-serving match-winning muscular all-rounder.

Russell’s form and fitness had been an issue in recent years. He retired from the IPL and is now part of KKR’s coaching staff.

Other notable releases by the three-time champions are Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock, Venkatesh Iyer, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. Releasing these players and some more freed up INR 64.3 crore for KKR that they used to rope in Cameron Green and Matheesha Pathirana in the auction.

Delhi Capitals and CSK Part With Their Most Recognisable Faces

Both Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings did away with a few experienced players like Faf du Plessis, Mohit Sharma, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda, and Vijay Shankar. CSK even surprisingly let go of Pathirana.

Standout IPL Auction 2026 Players List That Changed Squad Dynamics

Let us check out the 5 most impactful purchases from the IPL auction 2026 players list.

    • Cameron Green – KKR, INR 25.5 crore – Fast-bowling all-rounder with multiple batting gears
    • Matheesha Pathirana – KKR, INR 18 crore – Death-overs specialist pacer
    • Liam Livingstone – SRH, INR 13 crore – All-rounder who can hit sixes at will and versatile spinner with both off-spin and leg-spin skillsets
    • Jason Holder – GT, INR 7 crore – Experienced all-rounder who has resurrected his T20 career, can bowl in death, and use long levers to hit maximums
    • Ravi Bishnoi – RR, INR 7.2 crore – Could be next big thing in Indian T20 spin department; he is a leg-spinner but his stock ball is the googly

KKR’s ₹43 Crore Overseas Duo and the Gamble They Represent

Having released Andre Russell, Venkatesh Iyer, and Anrich Nortje, KKR were touted to splurge as much as required for Cameron Green. And they did, purchasing the Aussie all-rounder for INR 25.2 crore, which many believed was less than what had been expected Green to be sold for.

KKR also doubled down on their bid to procure Sri Lankan death-over phenom Matheesha Pathirana, buying him for INR 18 crore.

While KKR have plugged holes in their XI with these two signings in their IPL 2026 players list, they will fret over their fitness status throughout the competition as both Green and Pathirana have had injury issues over the last couple of years and their bodies are prone to breaking down any time.

CSK’s Youth Revolution Through Uncapped and Emerging Buys

After letting go of the likes of Conway, Jadeja, Curran, Shankar, Hooda, and Tripathi, it was clear that CSK wanted younger legs in their squad for IPL 2026; they had retained Brevis, Mhatre, and Patel, signaling the same.

In the IPL 2026 auction, CSK went all out for the uncapped duo of Rajasthan’s Kartik Sharma, a 19-year-old keeper-batsman, and Uttar Pradesh’s Prashant Veer, a 20-year-old left-arm spinning all-rounder in Jadeja’s mold.

While the 44-year-old Dhoni remains at the franchise, CSK have begun their youth revolution.

Analysis of the Most Interesting IPL 2026 Squads

Three of the very interesting squads in this year’s IPL would be RCB, KKR, and GT.

Defending champions RCB will rely on the likes of Hazlewood and Bethell, while their new signing Venkatesh Iyer could form a solid middle-order pair with captain Rajat Patidar.

KKR are spoilt for choices in the overseas department. They could have perhaps the most destructive opening pair this season in Finn Allen and Tim Seifert, while Narine, Green, and Pathirana are likely first-choice starters.

Last season, GT lacked batting depth. They have addressed this by including Jason Holder. The presence of either Holder or Phillips in the lineup would provide freedom to Gill, Sudharsan, and Buttler, making GT an even more formidable outfit.

RCB as Defending Champions Strengths in Depth and One Key Fragility

Let us do the SWOT analysis of defending champions RCB from their IPL 2026 players list and squad.

Strengths: RCB’s batting is their strength that starts from Kohli, Salt, Padikkal, and Patidar and gets dangerous with Tim David, Jacob Bethell, Romario Shepherd, and Krunal Pandya.

    Weakness:

RCB will be concerned over the fitness of their pacers Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Their bowling backups on the bench aren’t world-class either.

    Opportunities:

On an individual level, Venkatesh Iyer will eye IPL 2026 as an opportunity to bounce back from his slump last season.

    Threats:

The biggest threat to any title-winning team in any tournament is always not to get under the pressure of the defending champions’ tag.

Only twice in the IPL history has a franchise won two consecutive titles. History awaits RCB, who will need to overcome this psychological threat of burden and expectations after their maiden IPL triumph last year.

One Player to Watch From Every IPL 2026 Team

From the IPL 2026 players list, let us see one player to watch out for from each IPL team in the upcoming season. This is not about the high-profile name but more around someone strategically important to the side’s chances of lifting the trophy this year.

    • Chennai Super Kings – Ayush Mhatre
    • Delhi Capitals – Tristan Stubbs
    • Gujarat Titans – Rashid Khan
    • Kolkata Knight Riders – Finn Allen
    • Lucknow Super Giants – Nicholas Pooran
    • Mumbai Indians – Hardik Pandya
    • Punjab Kings – Priyansh Arya
    • Rajasthan Royals – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
    • Royal Challengers Bengaluru – Josh Hazlewood
    • Sunrisers Hyderabad – Liam Livingstone

    Conclusion

We can conclude that the IPL 2026 will truly be a tournament of generations clashing. The outgoing seniors like MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli will take the field against talented youngsters including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre among the many such uncapped cricketers on the IPL 2026 players list. The transition period in the IPL has commenced.

On the team front, Mumbai Indians once again start as strong favorites. Follow Innings Break for sharp cricket stories, expert match analysis, player updates, and daily IPL coverage that keeps you ahead of every big moment this season.
