Cricket will return to the Asian Games in 2026 as part of the Aichi-Nagoya edition in Japan. Both men’s and women’s competitions will be played in the T20 format, bringing several of Asia’s strongest cricket teams into the medal race. India enter the tournament as defending champions in both events, while Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will also be among the major contenders. Afghanistan and Nepal could create difficult matchups in the men’s competition, especially if they progress from the preliminary groups. The tournament structure is different for the two events, with the men’s competition beginning with a group stage and the women’s event starting directly with the quarter-finals.

Asian Games Cricket 2026 Format and Schedule

The Asian Games cricket competitions will be played in the T20 format, with separate events for men and women. Although both tournaments will use short-form cricket, their structures are different.

    ICE777

The men’s competition features 10 teams. Six teams will begin in the preliminary group stage, while four seeded teams will enter directly at the quarter-final stage. Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal are placed in Group A, while Hong Kong China, Malaysia and Oman form Group B. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarter-finals.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the four seeded teams in the men’s tournament. Their direct entry means they will not need to play a preliminary group match before the knockout stage.

The women’s competition includes eight teams and begins directly with the quarter-finals. This format gives the leading teams less room for error, as a defeat in the opening knockout match could end their medal hopes. The gold medal matches in both events will be played after the semi-finals.

When and Where Will Cricket Be Played?

The cricket competitions will be held at Korogi Athletic Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The men’s tournament begins on September 24, 2026, while the medal matches are scheduled for October 3. The venue will host the T20 matches during the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with teams adjusting to the local conditions and the pressure of playing in a major multi-sport event.

    How the Men’s Competition Works

The men’s competition begins with two preliminary groups. Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal are placed in Group A, while Hong Kong China, Malaysia and Oman are in Group B. The top two teams from each group will move into the quarter-finals.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh receive direct entry into the knockout stage as seeded teams. This gives them an advantage because they avoid the group-stage matches, but it also means they must be ready immediately when the quarter-finals begin. From that stage, teams need to win their quarter-final and semi-final before competing for the gold medal.

Asian Games Cricket 2026 Groups Explained

The men’s preliminary groups contain six teams competing for four quarter-final places. Each group has three teams, so every match will carry significant importance. There is little opportunity to recover from a poor performance because only two teams from each group will qualify.

Group A features Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal. Afghanistan bring international experience and a strong T20 background, while Nepal have developed a competitive reputation in associate-level cricket. Japan will have the benefit of playing at home and could use local knowledge to challenge the more experienced teams.

Group B includes Hong Kong China, Malaysia and Oman. All three teams have experience in regional and international T20 cricket, but they will need consistency across batting and bowling to finish in the top two.

The group winners and runners-up will advance to the quarter-finals, where they will meet India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or Bangladesh. The final group positions could therefore have a major effect on the knockout draw.

Group A: Afghanistan, Japan and Nepal

Group A could produce a close contest between Afghanistan, Nepal and hosts Japan. Afghanistan have the advantage of greater international T20 experience and a strong history in the format. Nepal also have a growing T20 profile and have shown that they can compete against established associate teams.

Japan will hope home conditions can help them challenge both sides. Their knowledge of the venue and local environment could be useful, particularly if the pitch or weather creates unfamiliar conditions for visiting teams. Only two teams can qualify, so every result will be important. The teams that finish in the top two will then face one of the four seeded sides in the quarter-finals.

Group B: Hong Kong China, Malaysia and Oman

Group B includes Hong Kong China, Malaysia and Oman, making it another important qualification battle. Oman have experience in international T20 cricket and will look to use that background to control the group. Hong Kong China also have experience in regional competitions and can pose problems if their bowlers make early breakthroughs.

Malaysia will rely on their familiarity with Asian conditions and their ability to perform as a team. With only two qualification places available, the group could be decided by net run rate if the teams finish with similar records. The two successful teams will enter the knockout stage, where the challenge will become much harder against the seeded sides.

India Cricket Team: The Strongest Gold Medal Contender

India enter the men’s competition as defending champions and have a squad with considerable T20 experience. Their combination of established international players and younger attacking talent gives them depth in every department.

Shreyas Iyer will lead the team, while players such as Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan provide several batting options. India also have all-rounders such as Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, along with a strong bowling group featuring Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah.

The direct quarter-final entry is another advantage for India. They do not need to spend energy on the preliminary group stage and can focus on preparing for the knockout matches. However, the format also makes the first match extremely important because one poor performance could end their title defence.

    India’s Star-Studded Squad

India’s squad includes several players with experience in international and franchise T20 cricket. Shreyas Iyer brings leadership and batting experience, while Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma offer attacking options in the middle and top order.

Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan provide wicketkeeping and batting depth. Axar Patel and Washington Sundar add balance, while Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah give India experienced pace options. The squad also has flexibility because several players can perform more than one role.

    Why India’s Knockout Entry Matters

India’s direct entry into the quarter-finals means they need only three wins to retain the gold medal. They avoid the preliminary group stage and will have more time to prepare for their first knockout match.

At the same time, the direct entry creates immediate pressure. India will not have a chance to build momentum through easier group matches, and their first game will be against a team that has already qualified through the preliminary round. The knockout format also reduces the margin for error.

Pakistan Cricket: A Serious Medal Threat

Pakistan are one of the four seeded teams and will enter the men’s competition directly in the quarter-finals. Their squad includes Sahibzada Farhan, Saim Ayub, Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz, giving them a mix of international experience and attacking batting ability.

Pakistan’s T20 style often depends on aggressive batting, quick scoring and the ability to take wickets during the powerplay. Their players have experience in high-pressure matches, which could be valuable in a short knockout tournament.

Sahibzada Farhan will lead the team and bring considerable international T20 experience. Saim Ayub can provide attacking intent at the top of the order, while Abdul Samad and Hasan Nawaz add further power in the batting unit.

    Sahibzada Farhan Leads Pakistan

Sahibzada Farhan will captain Pakistan during the Asian Games campaign. He enters the tournament with 46 T20I appearances and more than 1,300 international T20I runs, giving him experience in the format.

His role will be important at the top of the batting order, where Pakistan will look to score quickly during the powerplay. As captain, he will also need to manage the team’s approach during the short knockout campaign.

Pakistan’s batting depth could allow Farhan to play a controlled innings when required, while other players take the attacking role. His leadership and experience will be central to Pakistan’s medal hopes.

    Pakistan’s Route to a Medal

Pakistan’s direct quarter-final entry means they avoid the preliminary group stage, but their first match will immediately carry knockout pressure. They cannot afford a slow start because a defeat would end their tournament.

The team’s route to the final will depend on the quarter-final draw and their ability to adapt to the opposition. Pakistan are placed on the opposite side of the draw from India, which could keep a possible India-Pakistan meeting until the final.

That possibility would add interest to the competition, but Pakistan must first win their quarter-final and semi-final. Their batting aggression, bowling discipline and ability to handle pressure will be important factors.

Bangladesh Cricket Can Improve on Its Previous Medal

Bangladesh enter the Asian Games after winning a bronze medal at the previous edition. Their 2026 squad includes several established international players, giving them the experience needed for a demanding knockout tournament.

Litton Das will lead the team, while Najmul Hossain Shanto, Tawhid Hridoy and Rishad Hossain provide experience across the batting and bowling departments. Mustafizur Rahman and Hasan Mahmud add pace options, while the squad also has spin resources.

Bangladesh’s previous medal gives them knowledge of the Asian Games environment and the pressure surrounding the competition. They will hope that experience can help them improve on their earlier result.

However, the knockout route will be difficult. Bangladesh must overcome at least one strong seeded opponent to reach the semi-finals, and further wins against teams such as India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka may be needed to challenge for gold.

Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto Add Experience

Litton Das and Najmul Hossain Shanto bring international experience to Bangladesh’s batting unit. Their ability to build an innings could be important in T20 matches where early wickets can change the result quickly.

Tawhid Hridoy adds middle-order options, while Rishad Hossain provides another important skill through his spin bowling and lower-order batting. Mustafizur Rahman and Hasan Mahmud give Bangladesh experienced pace options.

This combination gives Bangladesh balance across batting, spin and pace. Their performance will depend on whether the experienced players can guide the younger members of the squad through the pressure of knockout cricket.

Can Bangladesh Move From Bronze to Gold?

Bangladesh already knows what it takes to win a medal at the Asian Games after securing bronze previously. That experience could help them manage the pressure of the tournament.

Moving from bronze to gold, however, will require a stronger performance against the leading teams. Bangladesh will need to win their quarter-final and then overcome another major opponent in the semi-final. India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are among the teams they could face during the knockout rounds.

Other Teams That Could Influence the Medal Race

The medal race will not be limited to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Sri Lanka are also seeded directly into the quarter-finals and have the experience to compete against the leading teams.

Afghanistan and Nepal could also influence the tournament if they qualify from Group A. Afghanistan bring international T20 experience, while Nepal have developed a strong following and competitive record in associate cricket.

The group-stage results will be important because the teams entering the quarter-finals could arrive with confidence and match practice. A strong performance in the preliminary round could help Afghanistan or Nepal challenge one of the seeded teams.

The knockout draw will therefore play a major role in shaping the medal race.

    Sri Lanka’s Direct Quarter-Final Advantage

Sri Lanka are one of the four seeded men’s teams and will enter the competition directly at the quarter-final stage. This gives them the same structural advantage as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Their direct entry means they will avoid the preliminary group stage and need only three wins to claim the gold medal. However, they must be ready from their first match because there will be no opportunity to recover from an early defeat. Their quarter-final opponent will determine the first major challenge of their campaign.

Afghanistan and Nepal Could Cause an Upset

Afghanistan and Nepal could be difficult opponents if they qualify from Group A. Afghanistan have played a large amount of international T20 cricket and possess players who are comfortable in pressure situations.

Nepal have also built a strong reputation in associate-level T20 cricket. Their players have experience in competitive regional tournaments and can create problems through aggressive batting and disciplined bowling.

Both teams must first finish in the top two of Group A. If they reach the quarter-finals, they could enter the knockout stage with confidence and match practice, giving them a chance to challenge one of the seeded teams.

Women’s Cricket Medal Contenders and India’s Title Defence

The Asian Games will also feature a women’s T20 competition, with India entering as defending champions. India Women have a strong squad led by Harmanpreet Kaur and featuring experienced players such as Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma.

Pakistan Women, Bangladesh Women and Sri Lanka Women are also expected to be major contenders. The women’s event begins directly at the quarter-final stage, so every team must perform immediately.

India’s combination of batting depth, all-round ability and bowling options makes them an important team in the tournament. However, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have enough experience to challenge them in the knockout rounds.

The women’s draw also includes Japan, China, Malaysia and Thailand, giving the competition a wide regional representation.

    India Women Start Against Japan

India Women will face hosts Japan in the quarter-finals. Harmanpreet Kaur will lead a squad that includes Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma and Sree Charani.

India’s batting options allow them to attack during the powerplay while also having players who can control the middle overs. Deepti Sharma adds balance through her all-round skills, while the bowling unit provides variety.

Japan will have home support and local knowledge, but India enter the match with considerable experience in international women’s cricket. The direct quarter-final fixture means India must be ready from their opening game.

Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the Women’s Draw

The other women’s quarter-finals will see Bangladesh face China, Sri Lanka meet Malaysia and Pakistan play Thailand. These matches will decide which teams join India in the semi-finals.

The direct knockout format leaves little room for mistakes. Even teams with strong international records must perform well in their opening match because there is no group stage to provide a second chance.

Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka will therefore need strong starts, disciplined bowling and reliable middle-order batting to progress.

What Could Decide the Asian Games Cricket Medals?

Several factors could decide the medal winners in the Asian Games cricket competitions. Powerplay batting will be important because teams have only 20 overs to build a competitive total. Losing early wickets could place pressure on the middle order and reduce the options available at the end of the innings.

Death-over bowling will also play a major role. Teams that can control the final four or five overs may have an advantage in close matches. Spin matchups could be equally important, especially if the pitch offers assistance to slower bowlers.

The unfamiliar surroundings in Japan could also reward teams that adapt quickly.

    Conclusion

Asian Games cricket 2026 will feature two T20 competitions, with India defending their men’s and women’s gold medals. The men’s event has an unusual structure, with six teams competing in the preliminary groups before joining India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the quarter-finals.

India enter the men’s competition as one of the leading gold medal contenders because of their squad depth, experience and direct knockout entry. Pakistan and Sri Lanka also have strong medal opportunities, while Bangladesh will look to improve on their previous bronze medal.

Afghanistan and Nepal could create difficult matchups if they qualify from Group A, while the women’s competition is expected to feature strong challenges from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. With every knockout match carrying major importance, the quarter-finals will be the defining stage of the tournament.
