Run-scoring in modern-day T20 cricket is touching unprecedented heights. Piling up scores of 200 is now common, and teams aren’t fettered anymore by the prospect of chasing down targets in excess of 200, something that was an anomaly until a few years ago.
Team India smashing the 250-run barrier in the semifinal and final of the recent T20 World Cup 2026 epitomized the growing par score in today’s shortest format.
This trend of the 200-run mark being desensitized has been underpinned by the thunderous power-hitting in the IPL in the past three seasons.
The IPL has often set the mold for T20 cricket around the world. But the IPL is also the avenue where the most famous “lowest team total” resides.
While the lowest team score by a Full Member nation in T20Is is 45, fans don’t miss a chance to bring up the lowest score in the IPL by a team – 49 by RCB!
What Is the Lowest Score in IPL History and Who Holds the Unwanted Record
The lowest score in IPL history by a team is 49, an embarrassing record held by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). RCB attained this unwanted record on April 23, 2017, when they were bowled out for only 49 runs by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata in a league stage encounter.
KKR had set RCB a target of 132 runs. In the chase, though, the Virat Kohli-led batting unit fell like a pack of cards, getting bundled for 49 runs. Nathan Coulter-Nile, Chris Woakes, and Colin de Grandhomme claimed three wickets each, while Umesh Yadav took one wicket.
Why This Record Has Survived for Over Nine Seasons in a High-Scoring Era
It’s not at all surprising that this 49 all-out record of the lowest score in IPL history by RCB has survived eight seasons now, and it’s very unlikely that it will be broken in the future.
The run rate chart has only been going upward in T20 cricket. That is in particular in the IPL, where pitches have gotten flatter, bowlers are becoming more defensive than attacking, and batsmen are batting with more freedom than ever.
Matters have further compounded for the bowlers and aided the batsmen by the Impact Player rule. The Impact Player rule allows teams to bat with one more batsman than the one present in the original playing XI.
So, forget about a team getting bowled out for 49 or less, as that was a freakish collapse; batting units now aspire to score around 60 runs only in the powerplay overs.
Since RCB’s 49 all-out, the next lowest total after the 2017 IPL came in 2023, when Rajasthan Royals were evaporated for 58, incidentally by RCB in Jaipur.

The Full Story of KKR vs RCB April 23 2017 at Eden Gardens
In those days, the KKR vs RCB fixture was one of the marquee, much-awaited matches, a game that fans excitedly awaited. This is because it involved two of Indian cricket’s biggest and most intense superstars: Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir.
This particular match was played at KKR’s home ground, Eden Gardens, where Kohli won the toss and elected to field first, hoping for some dew later in the night to help his side in their chase. Little did he know that his team would get nowhere near KKR’s total.
Sunil Narine helped KKR to a spirited start, whacking 34 runs off 17 balls. However, the pitch turned out to be a spicy one, as none of the other KKR batsmen managed more than 18 runs. Captain Gambhir was dismissed for 14 (11).
KKR’s innings ended with 131 runs in 19.3 overs. The standout bowler for RCB was leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who returned with figures of 3/16. Tymal Mills and Pawan Negi bagged a brace each, and three others took a wicket each.
In the chase, RCB were jolted on the third ball of the first over as Kohli edged Coulter-Nile to second slip for a duck. The procession of wickets had begun: Mandeep Singh and AB de Villiers were dismissed in the second and third overs, respectively. A couple of overs later, Kedar Jadhav became Coulter-Nile’s third scalp as RCB lost four wickets in the powerplay.
The demoralizing dent was handed to RCB right after the powerplay as Chris Gayle gave catching practice to mid-off off Woakes. RCB now 40/5.
And then a shocking collapse: RCB went from 40/5 in 6.2 overs to 49/10 in 9.4 overs as the lower order was blown away by KKR seamers.
This is how the story of the most infamous IPL innings occurred, wherein RCB secured the lowest score in IPL record books.
Nathan Coulter-Nile duly bagged the Player of the Match award for his 3/21, which included the wickets of Kohli, de Villiers, and Jadhav.
How Colin de Grandhomme Took 3 Wickets for Just 4 Runs to Seal the Collapse
Among the pace battery that KKR fielded that night, the least threatening seemed to be Colin de Grandhomme with his military medium-pace bowling. However, it was the New Zealand all-rounder who registered the best bowling figures on the night: 1.4-0-4-3. Yes, three wickets for four runs in only 10 balls.
Grandhomme packed up RCB’s lower order in the blink of an eye, his victims being Pawan Negi, Tymal Mills, and Yuzvendra Chahal, all three with little ability to bat. It was indeed de Grandhomme’s astonishing spell that helped KKR hand RCB the lowest score in IPL history.
KKR Bowling Figures in Full:
- Nathan Coulter-Nile: 3/21
- Umesh Yadav: 1/15
- Chris Woakes: 3/6
- Colin de Grandhomme: 3/4
RCB Lowest Score in IPL A Complete Franchise Collapse Record
It’s ironic that while RCB have always boasted some of the biggest T20 names on the planet, they also are the holders of four of the 10 lowest scores in IPL history. Their star-studded batting department has had the likes of Kohli, Dravid, Kallis, Gayle, de Villiers, KL Rahul, Yuvraj Singh, Faf du Plessis, and Glenn Maxwell.
Why Does RCB Keep Collapsing Despite Having World Class Batters
Virat Kohli has been a constant figure in RCB’s history, and this means he’s also been part of all the games where RCB collapsed and surrendered for cheap totals, including the lowest score in IPL.
RCB’s batting order could almost always be divided into two frames: one for the superstar batsmen like Kohli, ABD, Gayle, and du Plessis; and one for the lesser-known and lower-profiled players.
During all of RCB’s major collapses, the common theme has been that the superstar batsmen failed and the others couldn’t bail the team out of trouble. A key reason for this is that RCB have largely been carried by these famed batsmen, so others haven’t had to do much lifting. And when the time came when the likes of Kohli, ABD, etc. faltered, the others had little idea how to get the side out of a jam.
Franchise-wise Lowest Scores in IPL History from CSK to SRH

| Delhi Capitals | 66 | MI | 2017 | Feroz Shah Kotla |

The Lowest Score Ever Recorded in an IPL Final
Now, from the lowest score in IPL history, which is RCB’s 49, we move to the lowest IPL final total. Across the 18 IPL finals, the lowest score in an IPL final is SRH’s 113 all-out against KKR in the IPL 2024 final.
In the SRH vs KKR IPL 2024 final in Chennai, SRH were bowled out for only 113. It’s funny because SRH had been breaking all kinds of batting records throughout the season as Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, Aiden Markram, and Heinrich Klaasen went on a rampage against the bowlers.
However, in the final, they were met with a clinical KKR bowling attack, spearheaded by Mitchell Starc, who was the Player of the Final for his 2/14 that included the wicket of Abhishek, while Head was bowled by Vaibhav Arora for a duck. KKR took only 10.3 overs to haul down the target and seal their third IPL trophy.
SWOT Analysis of Teams Most Vulnerable to Posting the Next Lowest IPL Score
Now, let’s do an interesting exercise by predicting which team might have some chances of recording the lowest score in IPL 2026. For this, we pick Rajasthan Royals as a side that has a combustible batting order.
This is because they have ultra-aggressive batsmen like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Riyan Parag, and Shimron Hetmyer – all of whom could fail together – and inexperienced ones like Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Dhruv Jurel, and some out-of-form ones like Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. RR’s batting lineup seems like a recipe made for a disaster one day in IPL 2026.
SWOT Analysis of Rajasthan Royals:
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
| Aggressive openers with match-winning potential | Over-dependence on young openers |
| Impact Player rule can offset a collapse | Lower-order batters lack T20 finishing pedigree |
| Opportunities | Threats |
| Impact Player rule can help in recovery | Jaipur pitch inconducive for high-scoring games |
| Batting order can be rejigged after early collapse | Opposition teams have world-class fast bowlers like Bumrah, Hazlewood, Starc, Jansen |
What the Record Books Tell Us About Avoiding a Lowest Score Disaster in IPL
Given the attacking mindset and all-guns-blazing modus operandi of batsmen in T20 cricket these days, no batting order in the IPL is collapse-proof.
But to avoid the ignominy of achieving the lowest score in IPL history, coaches and captains can make some proactive decisions. The ideal way for a T20 lineup is to have one crisis man always ready – an anchor player who can bat in any position when required, especially if the lineup is on the verge of a collapse.
Further, having a left-right combination in the middle could help teams avoid losing wickets in a cluster. The record books say that teams that lose three or more wickets inside the powerplay are at risk of getting blown away in the middle overs. So avoiding such a scenario is imperative for the batting side.
Conclusion
As mentioned earlier, RCB’s lowest score in IPL, a dismal show of 49 all-out, remains baffling. Because that lineup included the Hall of Fame trio of Kohli, de Villiers, and Gayle; the same trio that was involved in RCB smashing 263/5 against Pune Warriors back in 2013, a record that stood for 11 years.
The IPL 2026 will see some bowlers in their peak form, such as Bumrah, Jansen, Pathirana, Ngidi, Archer, etc. So is it possible that a team could be bowled out for a score lower than RCB’s 49 all-out?
